Biography


Gladstone has lectured on the animation industry at schools and institutions throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. He has taught various animation, cinematography and motion picture courses and workshops at, and on behalf of, Stanford University, UCLA, American Film Institute, World Animation Celebration, University of Miami, VIFX, Cinesite, UNICEF, Vancouver Film School, Loyola Marymount University, Nickelodeon, San Jose State and SIGGRAPH.

He currently teaches at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design and has designed courses and helped train literally hundreds of people who work in animation.  Gladstone serves on several school advisory boards, philanthropic and educational organizations, produces public service television commercials and writes for animation and film history publications. He is the past chair of the City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission, is an active member of the “Animation Bank,” the international animation resource center’s working group, and serves on the executive board of ASIFA-Hollywood.

Current Activities: Visual Language and Story Structure presentations for Lucasfilm/ILM. Genre Presentations for Lucasarts. Long term, on-location studio consulting and training programs for Imagi Animation, USA and Hong Kong. Storyboard training proposal for Aardman Animation. Screenplay consultation for Imagine Entertainment and Enemes Animation.

2005-2007: Vice President, Artistic Development, STARZ Animation (formerly IDT Entertainment Animation). Responsible for artistic talent recruiting and training, evaluating animated projects to be considered for feature-length production, creative development and production consultation, acquisition of independent projects for theatrical and home video distribution, studio presentations and public outreach.

1998-2005: Head of Artistic Development, DreamWorks Animation. Responsible for all artistic training issues, enrichment and outreach activities at the studio. Credits include The Road to El Dorado, Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron, Sinbad and Shark Tale. Additionally, instrumental in bringing independent animated projects such as Millennium Actress, Ghost in the Shell II and Casshern to DreamWorks for co-funding and distribution under the studios’ Go Fish banner.

1997: Producer in Development, Warner Bros. Feature Animation.

1995-96: Original Producer for Warner Bros.’ first animated feature, Quest for Camelot.

1990-95: Manager of Training, Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida. Responsibilities included recruitment, training and skills evaluation for all phases of animation. Designed and implemented training curriculums for all animation disciplines. Feature films included, Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King and Pocahontas.

In 1994, became Training Director, responsible for Disney Feature Animation recruitment and animation education, worldwide.

1989-90: Creative Director and Animation Supervisor, Limelite Studios. Responsible for design and execution of animated films and effects for studio clients as well as developing projects for the studio’s independent production division.

1974-89: Owner/President, Persistence of Vision, Inc., a full service animation studio specializing in advertising and educational films. Responsibilities included sales, project design, direction, all phases of art production and postproduction. Animation for companies such as Nickelodeon, J.C. Penney, AT&T, American Film Institute, United States Committee on Drug Abuse Prevention, Armed Forces Radio and Television, State of Florida, Learning Corporation of America, Proctor and Gamble, Sun Oil Company, Government of Venezuela, Federated Stores, Monsanto and numerous regional businesses and individuals.

1973-74: Animator, Associated Filmmakers International.

1971-73: Cartoonist, University of Florida’s Alligator, campus daily newspaper.
