Synopsis
Swing You Sinners! features the Fleischers’ recurring character Bimbo who, after attempting to steal a chicken, is taunted by a group of other-worldly creatures who chastise him for his sins and tell him he is going to hell. The short was part of Max Fleisher’s “Talkartoons” series, which was known for its dark and gritty cartoons, something which is demonstrated in Swing You Sinners!
Reception:
In Swing You Sinners, as in other cartoons featuring him, Bimbo is coded as a blackface minstrel, and the cartoon’s use of swing music and the trope of the Black-coded character being a chicken thief would have spoken to audiences at the film’s time of release who were well-versed in this stereotype. This short fit into the Fleishers’ habit of making cartoons that relied on minstrel tropes and racist stereotypes in their character designs and plots. (Sammond, pg. 107)
