Synopsis
Tarantella is an avant-garde, abstract, animated short film with piano accompaniment by Edwin Gerschefski. Mary Ellen Bute, the director and animator of Tarantella, kept some of Norman McLaren’s original paintings from their previous collaboration and reused some of the images as inspiration. “Tarantella features rich reds and blues that Bute uses to signify a lighter mood, while her syncopated spirals, shards, lines and squiggles dance exuberantly to Gerschefski’s modern beat.”
