A retrospective of the appearance and development of Shadow Art in Chinese historical records
The exact origins of Asian shadow puppetry are a point of contention, with disagreements about which tradition came first arising from cultural and national competition. However, no matter what form they take, and from which culture they emerge, the different traditions of shadow puppetry have developed distinctive styles and performance techniques. This month’s Explore introduces two forms of shadow puppetry, which have acquired the status of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity from UNESCO, piying and wayang kuilt, from China and Indonesia, respectively.
