Biography

Donnelly’s career in the animation industry is mostly associated with Paul Terry and his two animation studios, Aesop’s Fables Studio and Terrytoons. Donnelly started at the former studio in 1926. When Aesop’s Fables Studio was reorganized and renamed Van Beuren Studios in 1929, Donnelly stayed at the newly formed studio for the next couple of years. In the second half of the 1930s, Donnelly moved to Walt Disney Animation Studios. In 1938, he returned to working for Paul Terry and joined his Terrytoons, where he worked as an animator and director (since 1937) for the next 26 years. During his long time involvement with Terry’s studio, Donnelly worked on some of the studio’s most popular series, such as Gandy Goose, Super Mouse, Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, Terry Bears, among others.
