Biography

Roque Federizon Lee (Roxlee) is a Filipino experimental animator, filmmaker, and cartoonist who is considered a pioneer in Filipino animation. He is known for proposing the 12 Commandments on the creation of independent Filipino filmmaking, emphasizing “originality, resourcefulness and thrift” as opposed to mainstream stardom (Lim 194). Two of his works, the animated ABCD (1985) and live-action Juan Gapang (1986), as discussed by Professor Bliss Cua Lim, are allegories about suppression under the Marcos government (198). He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award on alternative cinema from FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) in 2020 (Jen).
