Biography
Vatroslav Mimica is a Croatian screenwriter and director who is considered one of the pioneers of the Zagreb school animation originated from Croatia and former Yugoslavia.
Mimica entered the University of Zagreb School of Medicine before joining Young Communist League of Yugoslavia (SKOJ) and the National Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia, known as Yugoslav Partisans, during World War II (Horton “Kinoeye – Croatian film: Vatroslav Mimica interviewed”).
During the 1950s of the post-war period, Mimica entered the film industry as he joined the Jadran Film Production Studio. He first started with live-action feature and documentary films such as In the Storm (U oluji) (1952). In late 50s, Mimic collaborated with artists of the Zagreb School of Animation, working as screenwriter of Cowboy Jimmy (1957) and Nocturno (1958) directed by Dušan Vukotić and Nikola Kostelac respectively (Gilić 126). Mimic’s third animated film The Loner (Samac) (1958) won the Venice Grand Prix. He directed Typhoid Sufferers (Tifusari)(1963) based on Jure Kaštelan’s poem of the same name.
Mimic continued working as screenwriters for many subsequent Zagreb animations such as Tamer of Wild Horses (Krotitelj divljih konja)(1967), and The Fly (Muha)(1967) as he returned to live-action films until retirement in 1981 (Gilić 126).
